Because buying new 8Mb chips is expensive, and 64Mb is cheaper?

Seriously, newer memory comes in larger packages and is cheaper. (How
much does a 4K CMOS chip cost nowadays :-) Compare the price of DDR2,
DDR3, and DDR4.
