IMO PORTAGE_TMPDIR should not be on such an important filesystem as /var. Having system programs unable to function properly when they cannot write to logfiles because you OOo emerge has filled the filesystem is not good. A separate filesystem for this, using either ext2 or tmpfs is a safer, and faster, option -- Neil Bothwick Happiness is merely the remission of pain.
