I've use NetApps and now use ZFS. Both have snapshots. Both can be setup (NetApp is by default) to take a snapshot every X minutes, hour, day, week month. They typically add about 10% to the space and really help with the "oops I deleted" things.
I want something for when 2 drives die and also to archive a point in time onto tape/DVD to store offsite. I don't trust an unpowered external drive to preserve the data; the manufactures don't design or test for that.
