IN TODAY'S EZINE: Cheap flights to the Gulf, the news, literary links, news
from near and far... and even some very simple but useful tips on how to
grow trees in your backyard, village, town or city!

CHEAP FLIGHTS TO THE GULF: Now, Air India is offering cheaper
flights to the Gulf, with its Air India Express network. The bad
news: no direct connections to Goa, but only to Kerala, Mumbai and
Delhi. Maybe there's a need to lobby for Goa flights? More details
at http://www.airindiaexpress.in/ where you can even book your
        tickets.

EXCERPTS FROM THE SITE * Destinations: Air-India Express plans to
offer flights to major international destinations within a distance
of around 4 hrs from different cities in India. Most of the flights
are quick-turn-around flights with a ground time of around 1-hour at
        the destinations.

To start-off Air-India Express plans to fly to four international
destinations Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat and Salalah, with service from
five Indian cities - Calicut, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Mumbai and
        Delhi.

Future plans include flights to Bahrain, Bangkok, Doha, Kuwait,
Kuala Lumpur, Sharjah and Singapore. In India, plans are afoot to
introduce flights from more Indian cities such as Chennai.
Air-India Express, based on market-trends, will be introducing many
new destinations, international as well as domestic. Reservations
Seats on Air-India Express flights can be booked through a very
customer-friendly web based reservations system. The booking system
has features like 'lowest fare finder' to help passengers find the
fares of their choice. Besides, seats may also be booked through our
        authorized travel agents.

[A search for 'low fares' from Mumbai to Abu Dhabi, offered a flight
on May 17, via Muscat, 4 hours 10 minutes, for just Rs 2750 per
adult. Air India Express says its airfares will be at least 25%
lower, but also depend on date of booking.-FN]

GETTING PUBLISHED, THE WRITERS SPEAK: Rene Barreto <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
sent in to Goanet -- goanet@goanet.org -- a recent post from the Navhind
Times, reporting on a writers' discussion held at the Fundacao Oriente.
Excerpt: "Panaji, April 24: A round-table discussion on 'Living the Literary
Life: Writing, Reward and Rejection', organised by Fundacao Oriente, at its
city headquarters, today observed that it is more important for a literary
person to write what he or she believes in, rather than succumb to the
demands of the publishing market and fall for the appetite of the readers.
The event was participated by the Goan writers, Margaret Mascarenhas, Maria
Aurora Couto, Victor Rangel-Ribeiro and poet, Manohar Shetty whose works,
Skin, Goa- A Daughter's Story, Tivolim and Ferry Crossings, respectively,
have been published by the major publishing houses." More such postings at

REMEMBERING FR ANTHONY DE MELLO: Dom Martin, the artist whose works have
been at Old Goa among other places, recalls that he knew the writer-priest
Anthony de Mello. Mello was again in the news recently, after the election
of the new Pope, who found his books objectionable as cardinal. Says Dom:
"Isn't it sad that rather than acknowledge the sun while it provides us with
sunshine, that we posthumously resurrect to acknowledge its existence and
benefits. Fr. Anthony, like so many others before him and to come, was
another victim of our intrinsic addiction or adherence to ignorance." A
recent post recalled the action against the priest's writing in the contest
of Cardinal Ratzinger becoming Pope Benedict XVI.

Writes Souza: "Konkanized Marathi was used to write the village
community records in Goa till almost mid 17th century! G. Ghantkar
[History of Goa through Goykanadi Script, Panaji, 1993] is the only
known Goan who can read that "Goykannadi" script today! Sinay
Brahmin Kulkarnis and Shanbags utilized that script for official
record-keeping. The Portuguese banned its administrative use in Goa
in the first quarter of the 17th century!"

BIBLIOGRAPHER AND SCHOLAR Henry Scholberg responds to Lourdes Bravo da Costa
Rodrigues' recent article on Goa's main library: "This is to let you know I
enjoyed your 'Little-known Nuggets from a Centuries-old Institution'. I made
use of (the library) many times, and it contains one or two of my books.
Please give my regards to the librarian if she's still there."

LISTING GOA'S HERITAGE PROPERTIES, BEGINNING IN AND AROUND PANJIM: The
Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH) New Delhi has
given the Goa Heritage Action Group a fund of Rs 400,000 to carry out the
listing (inventory) of heritage properties and sites in Goa. Says GHAG's
Heta Pandit: "This grant was given to us on the premise that there are about
4000 properties that needed to be listed immediately." Architect Tallulah
D'Silva was in charge of the team on behalf of the Group and has carried
this task out successfully for the city of Panjim. Students from various
colleges were trained for the task and each one has performed to
satisfaction. GHAG now have a list of about 1000 properties and sites from
Panjim, Ribandar and Caranzalem. The list runs into 12 booklets and for the
sake of referencing and convenience is now being published in the form of a
book titled 'Walking In and Around Panjim'. The beautiful publication has
architectural information, archival information on each of these properties
and a photograph. All the pics have been taken by Tushar Rao (some of his
work can be seen in the gallery of the lifestyle store Casa Goa, Baga) and
the book has been designed by Misha Gurnanee, a graduate of NID, Ahmedabad.
Says Pandit: "Goa Heritage Action Group is just waiting for the right moment
to release the book as it is bound to ruffle a few feathers in the
construction industry!" More at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goaheritage

OLD DRAVIDIAN SETTLEMENTS? Anthony Fernandes from Dubai asks, "I
suppose a very few people may know that a place between Carmona and
Tamoborim in Salcete there exits ruins of old Dravidians
settlements. The place is commonly known as 'Dravidian Mall'.
There are wells and other ruins. As a kid I have often heard from
old folks that every 12 years, the ancestors of this place return in
the form of burning lamps ('pontio'). They appear far away and as
you go closer they seem to go still far away. As a young man I was
warned not to follow these sights, but I and other kids had seen
these strange things only once about 45 odd years ago in the month
of May. Has anybody heard about this strange happenings? Perhaps we
should ask our old folks still alive. Has any excavation taken
        place there?"

TWO-MINUTE TIPS FOR A GREENER GOA: This is a mailing list you might find
useful http://groups.yahoo.com/group/bsg-goa/

Wrote Miguel Braganza: "Those of you who love plants, tree, nature
or gardening are welcome to be members of this group. Just send a
blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and you are a
member. We welcome membership in the Botanical Society of Goa,too.
It is open to all plant lovers. No other qualification. Life
        membership is just Rs 1000.

"As far as urban tree planting is concerned there are two good
options: 1. Plant tall seedlings raised in old cement bags. these
are available free with Nisarga Society of Mapusa (Sandeep Azrencar,
Ph.27533832 Margao) or at nominal prices (Rs 10 to Rs 50 each) with
the Forest Department or 2. Pole planting. Take a two to three
metres long branch of any Ficus species (Banyan, Peepul, Rubber
tree, etc), Gulmohur, Peltophorum/Copper Pod, Spondias (Amado) or
any other tree of which the branches can produce roots, an plant it
in a pit filled with soil and cow-dung manure at the onset of
        monsoons.

"It is our experience that branches and tall seedlings planted with
tree guards at the onset of monsoons till the end of June have 90%
survival. No watering is required till March. Three waterings (by
hiring tanker for roadside trees) at monthly intervals in the first
year will suffice. No watering ever after. It is good if the grass
that grows near the trees is removed by February each year to avoid
        loss due to accidental fire.

"Seedlings of trees like Pongamia (Karanj), Alstonia (Santon), Ficus
Mysorensis (Nunurki), Enterolobium (Raintree), Seedling mango
(Khunt), Mesua (Surangi), Mimosups elengi (Aonla), Michelia (Sonn
champa), Mellingtonia (zad chameli) and all types of palms can be
planted are ideal for urban planting for avenues and roadsides. For
roads with buildings on both sides, shorter trees like Bauhinia
(Apto), Plumeria (chamfo), Haemelia, Hibiscus (Shoe flower), Tagar
(Anant), Gardenia (Sant Anton), Murraya (Kamini), and Tecoma stens
        are better.

OF FRUITS AND WORDS: Sr Ethel writes in from Italy, about Domnic's recent
article: Congrats for this good article on the tiny fruits found on the
hillocks of Goa. Brings back memories as kids in summer when we used to
collect and enjoy these fruits. The elaborate description of each one is
very informative. May these beautiful articles continue and once more I
congratulate the writer.

But AF wrote: "What disappoints me about so much of your tales and
stories from Bardez is that so much of your phrases and words do not
sound or read like the Konkanim I heard and read growing up in
        Salcete."

tell me where i can get jambolum seeds as i am a diabetic?"

Writes Walter: "I remember, in 1960 I used to ask my Goan friends to
draw a map of Goa, and none of them even could visualize it, as to
where the rivers were, or their place of birth was. The same was my
knowledge of South Kanara. Today we are lucky. We can inform the
public more with the help of maps and articles, and cross
references. As we Mangalorean and Goans are from one stock, it would
be helpful for us to know our roots. I know my father studied

seeds and asafoetida separately in a frying pan and
