IN TODAY'S EZINE: Accidents at Tivim and Verna. And an interesting story on how the digitising of Goa's historic archive records is taking, oh, such a long time! There's also a recipe for sheera, from Isidore Coelho's famous book 'The Chef' (still in print after training generations).
o Bus skids off road at Tivim, 7 hurt. In the accident on Monday morning, the Ponda-bound bus was trying to overtake a vehicle and saw another coming from the opposite direction. It collided with a milk-van coming from Belgaum to Mapusa. Five injured were discharged, while Ana Moniz (45) from Colvale and Arun Naik (18) of Sangolda were still at hospital. (H)
o Goods train derails at Verna. The train was carrying Wheat from Punjab to Phalgat in Kerala. KRC instituted an internal probe. Traffic was thrown out of gear for a few hours on the rain-line after the accident just before noon on Monday. (H)
o Rabies claims another victim. Dilip B Ramnathkar, the sole bread winner, died of rabies. (GT) o Caranzalem murder was a well-hatched plot. Main accused Jackson Dadel and victim Godwin were good friends till they fell out. The five accused and three others allegedly consumed liquor at a bar in Agassaim and then proceeded to Caranzalem armed with broken beer bottles on four two-wheelers. (GT) o In Goa, the helmet rule has been implemented, but continues to be widely flouted. (GT) o In Miramar, a one-metre wide trench has been dug at the roundabout to curb the flooding, but the Corporation of the City of Panjim seems to be in the dark about it. (GT) o Parrikar alleges that Congress is making baseless charges "to receive kick-backs from contractors". (GT) o Konkan fruit festival to be held in Goa from May 6. (GT) See http://konkanfruit.swiki.net for full details. o Don't work as dictators, Jamir tells panchayat officials. (GT) o Goa University is launching a BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration) course at Saraswat College Mapusa, MES College of Vasco and Rosary College of Navelim. o Parrikar demands relief to squall-affected people. (H) o Corporation files plaint on illegal hutting at Cortim. (H) o Drugs worth Rs 60,000 seized at Vagator. (H)
Project to digitise documents at Archives moving in reverse gear. This very ambitious project to microfilm and digitalise priceless and historical documents stacked at the Goa Archives, was kickstarted 18 months ago. But in March 2004, the then government, instead of selecting a contractor to commence the work, proposed to select a consultant to advise the government on how to go about with the process! As many as 30 companies, both local and national or internationl had already submitted their expressions of interest to undertake the microfilming and computerise the documents. A year later, the Department of Archives has to start afresh and is preparing to float tenders... About 10 crore or 100 million document pages await microfilming and digitising. The project is expected to cost Rs 400 million, at 4 rupees a page. (Herald)
