Cong orchestrated Parrikar govt ouster: NDA

New Delhi, Feb 8: Bringing the dismissal of the BJP government in Goa to the forefront of its campaign against the UPA government, the opposition NDA today hit the streets accusing the Centre of "orchestrating" the ouster and indicated that it will stall the proceedings in the coming budget session of Parliament on the issue.

Kick-starting its nationwide agitation against the dismissal of the Manohar Parrikar government, the NDA staged a day-long sit-in here demanding its reinstatement and recall of Governor S C Jamir.

Lashing out at the Congress, BJP president L K Advani said, "The question is not about the dismissal of Goa government. It is about the Congress' attitude towards democracy."

"Whenever the Congress feels that it is losing its primacy, it never believes in democracy and tramples democracy, and this agitation is to save the power of democracy," he said.

Asserting that the Governor has set a "dangerous precedent", Advani said, "Our constitutional fathers have never imagined that Article 164, which says a particular state government can remain in power only when the Governor has full pleasure in it, would be used in this manner."

He claimed that the direction to dismiss the government was given in advance, even before the trial of strength on the floor of the House.

Addressing the gathering, BJP general secretary Sushma Swaraj said normal functioning of Parliament during the budget session would not be possible in the given situation.

Parrikar, who was also present, alleged that he was a victim of a conspiracy hatched by the Congress.

"Goa was the leading state in the country in terms of development and figures by the RBI and the Planning Commission are proof to that."

"Since the UPA government came to power, they started attempts to dethrone my government. First they removed the Governor and then sent a person, who himself has six defection cases against him, with a single target to destabilise the government," he charged.

In a show of strength, all top BJP leaders, including Chief Ministers of Gujarat, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, NDA convenor George Fernandes, leaders from Shiromani Akali Dal, Trinamool Congress and Biju Janata Dal participated in the sit-in. (Agencies)
