11th Annual All Goa Home Garden Competition 2006
 
 
The All Goa Home Garden Competition in January since 1996, the Konkan Fruit Fest in the month of May since 2003 and the Plant Utsav in November since 1998 organised by the Botanical Society of Goa  have continued and expanded in their scope and impact over the years.
 
The  Konkan Fruit Fest was held at the Corniche Road from 5th to 7th May, 2005 and the  PLANT UTSAV was held from 18 to 20 November, 2005 at the Garcia da Orta Municipal Garden, near Church Square, Panaji, since Miguel Braganza took charge as  the Prersident of  the BSG for the 3-year term 2005-08. The 11th annual All Goa Home Garden Competition, to be judged on 08th and 15th January, 2006, will begin the events for the next calendar year.  This is BSG's event together with the people of Goa. Together Everyone Achieves More.
 
The Home Gardens are judged in two categories:
1. Entirely designed and planted by the family using only labour, where needed; and
2. Professionally designed, laid out and/or maintained.
 
A team of judges comprising of landscapers and horticulturists visit the residences to judge the gardens. Entry fee is a nominal Rs.100/- per garden. the visits are scheduled for a Sunday to enable the home owners to be available during the judging. Except for drinking water, the competitors are requested not to detain the judges for refreshments to avoid inconvenience to other competitors.

 The BSG has been actively involved with the Corporation of the City of Panaji[CCP] during the last two years for keeping the trees on the Dayanand  Bandodkar Road in good health. These trees now need attention once again.  Human life is precious. Healthy trees ensure a better quality of life to all. The motto of the BSG , "PROTECT TREES. TREES PROTECT." is borrowed from the traditional wisdom of India " Vriksha rakshatay rakshith". There is no other way.
 
The new Executive Committee that  took charge on 01 April, 2005 has a continuum that has been the convention of the BSG since 1996 and consists of:
 Immediate Past President: Dr.H.Y.Karapurkar,D.Sc.[Germany], Chairman of Biodiversity Board,Goa and former Director of Agriculture and Chairman of Goa Public Service Commission.
 President: Miguel Braganza,M.Sc[Agri] Horti., Horticultural Consultant, Author and Editor of Diamond Group of Publications/Developmental Resource Books for multi-lateral donor agencies.
 Vice-President: Dr.Sudhanshu Saigal, M.D., Bonsai practitioner and leader of
 the Bunjin Group
 Secretary:  Christina de Souza, M.Com., Lecturer in Commerce, Government
 College, Khandola-Ponda, and Advisor Nature Club [BSG affiliate].
 Jt.Secretary: Rodney Almeida, B.Sc. in Chemistry, Proprietor of Rodney's
 Roses & Garden Centre and President of Goa Nurserymen's Association.
 Treasurer: Rena Fernandes, B.Sc.[Agri], Agriculture Officer[Information], Farmers' Training Centre, Ela Farm, Old Goa.

 EXECUTIVE MEMBERS;
 Dr.K.G.Hiremath, Ph.D. Botany, Head, Dept. of Botany, Dhempe College and
 Editor of books on Environment.
 Suvarna Fonseca e Antao, M.Sc. Botany, M.Phil[Environ Sc], Teacher of Botany,  BOLT Award winner 2004 and Advisor of Kalpavriksha Nature Club[BSG affiliate], Carmel HSS,Nuvem.
 Anand Jadhav, M.Sc.[Agri]Horticulture, Assistant Agriculture Officer at
Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula, and former lecturer in Horticulture[Vocational] at Government HSS,Valpoi.
 Ambrose Vaz, Manager, State Bank of India, student of YCMOU degree course in Horticulture and vermicompost practitioner.
 Antonio J.Gomes, former Secretary of BSG, garden lover and bonsai
 practitioner.
 
The incoming committee brings with it a rich experience in conducting the
 affairs of the BSG, organising hikes, Nature trails, training courses in
 gardening for amateurs/professionals, workshops/seminars for teachers and
 professionals and in servicing the member clubs in colleges, HSS and high
 schools. Members may volunteer their time to be available  at the
 office along with an E.C. member.
  
The Botanical Society of Goa looks forward to your continued support in  terms of time, expertise, encouragement and other forms to make Goa greener,  cleaner and a better place to live with beatiful trees and gardens as well as  healthy fruits, spices, vegetables and their products easily available round  the year for locals and tourists alike.
