Hi Katalin,

All of our Holocaust picture books, fiction and non-fiction, are shelved
together in the J section (not in our picture book collection). Middle grade
Holocaust fiction/chapter books are shelved by author in the J Fiction section
but they have a special Holocaust sticker on their spine so that they can be
easily identified (these are the ones we use:

While I always try to steer students to age appropriate material, if a
religious school student picks out a Holocaust book to check out and I’m
concerned that they may not be ready for it, I send an e-mail to the parents.
Something along the lines of: “Evan picked out the book X from the Library
today and I wanted to give you a heads up. Here’s the publisher’s description
and it’s recommended for ages XXX so you may want to take a look at it first or
read it together. You are welcome to come to the library with him next week to
select something different, if you prefer.” Reactions to my e-mail have ranged
from “thank you for letting me know, we will return it and choose something
else” to “that’s totally fine, he’s already read a ton of books about the
Holocaust.” The response has always been appreciative; never negative.

Good luck!

Subject: [ha-Safran] Holocaust books for children and grade school

Hi,
In my library, we have been toying with the idea of separating out books having
to do with the Holocaust for young and grade school children to their own
location. We worry about parents getting upset if a child picks out a book,
without proper preparation for the topic. I would appreciate some feedback
about the subject. Thanks.
