Hi Katalin, All of our Holocaust picture books, fiction and non-fiction, are shelved together in the J section (not in our picture book collection). Middle grade Holocaust fiction/chapter books are shelved by author in the J Fiction section but they have a special Holocaust sticker on their spine so that they can be easily identified (these are the ones we use: https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.demco.com/https:/*www.demco.com/subject-classification-labels-holocaust-500-roll__;Lw!!KGKeukY!mbZ7aemuP63I4QOrsq7vxYlhdeSMjjoerNzhQFMloQwlzN32iryr0ylb9I43Ft0_SOw$ <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.demco.com/https:/www.demco.com/subject-classification-labels-holocaust-500-roll__;!!KGKeukY!mbZ7aemuP63I4QOrsq7vxYlhdeSMjjoerNzhQFMloQwlzN32iryr0ylb9I43DUw1wB4$ >).
While I always try to steer students to age appropriate material, if a religious school student picks out a Holocaust book to check out and I’m concerned that they may not be ready for it, I send an e-mail to the parents. Something along the lines of: “Evan picked out the book X from the Library today and I wanted to give you a heads up. Here’s the publisher’s description and it’s recommended for ages XXX so you may want to take a look at it first or read it together. You are welcome to come to the library with him next week to select something different, if you prefer.” Reactions to my e-mail have ranged from “thank you for letting me know, we will return it and choose something else” to “that’s totally fine, he’s already read a ton of books about the Holocaust.” The response has always been appreciative; never negative. Good luck! We worry about parents getting upset if a child picks out a book, without proper preparation for the topic. I would appreciate some feedback about the subject. Thanks.
