Thank you very much for your feedback. 
One of additional benefits of
checkinstall is that it can build deb-packages but also
rpm-packages just as well. 

Afaik there is also the possibility to
build slackware packages. However I can only positively affirm
deb and rpm, since I never had the pleasure to work with
slackware.
