I'm not a freebsd tester, but I know there is a freebsd hplip 1.7.4a
port which should cover your psc 1350. This would be your best option
versus the tar ball install.

Both the port or the tar ball will require CUPS. It is possible to run
with LPD by using hpijs only for printing, but you will need to
configure the /etc/printcap file with an appropiate gs/hpijs command.

If you want to pursue installing the latest hplip 2.7.7 tar ball it
should be easier than the older 1.x.x version. This is because hplip
2.x.x no longer requires a persistent daemon for io and usb io only
requires libusb. Unique freebsd libusb extensions are no longer
required. So, I sure the freebsd community (and I) would be interested
in your feedback.
