No, I haven't seen that error that you saw before now.

One thing you can try is this:

1. Run the install using the .run file
2. Quit at the first prompt
3. cd into the hplip-2.x.x directory
4. Run ./check.py -t
5. Note the packages it is reporting needing to install
6. Run those package install commands manually on the command line
7. Re-run the installer by running ./install.py -i -a
