Well, I grabbed a more recent snapshot (3.2.0b5-20040125), re-compiled (this time under RedHat Enterprise AS 3.0) and tried the same index and I'm getting *much* better results - about 5 pages per second. So I'm not sure what was wrong with my RH 8.0, but 18,000 pages per hour I can live with and it sure beats the crap out of 1,000 pages per hour.
