In an unscientific test, it appears that 3.2.0b5 is about 20% faster than 3.1.6 at digging (indexing) a site on Mac OS X (10.3.4).

The test consisted of modifying the default htdig.conf file to include "robotstxt_name: master-htdig" (the "big dig") in order to get more accurate results.

3.1.6
Start time: Tue Jun 1 17:34:18 WEST 2004
Done Digging: Tue Jun 1 22:31:04 WEST 2004
Total: 4:57 (roughly)

3.2.0b5
Start time: Tue Jun 1 22:31:04 WEST 2004
Done Digging: Wed Jun 2 03:32:52 WEST 2004
Total: 4:02 (roughly)

Both versions were built by doing the following (note: no need for disable shared or anything...):

1. cd <htdig source directory>
2. chown -R tedsr:staff ./*
3. ./configure --prefix=/Library/htdig<version>
4. make
5. make install

I hope this helps with the pending decision.
