Markus,
I had been using those (well the LONG* type written as per the manual) and 
after some
changes, notifications actually stopped.

Stopping Icinga and deleting objects.cache and retention.dat then restarting it 
brought
everything in order.

This is not the first time this resolved some unexplained issues, is this known 
or is there
anything that can cause this such as an incorrect config option?
