If you already have X running and a desktop environment running on F7, you can start a new one on F8 (from the console in F1, for example) using: startx -- :1 So, for F12, it is startx -- :5 To run a different desktop environment/window manager, I believe you need to change ~/.xinitrc (check with any online search engine for more info).
