Call for Papers Theme: Philosophy, Religion, and the Meaning of Nationhood in the 21st Century Type: International Symposium Institution: Canadian Jacques Maritain Association (CJMA) Ryerson University Location: Toronto, ON (Canada) Date: 27.–28.5.2017 Deadline: 15.1.2017 __________________________________________________ (Version française en bas) In the 21st century, diverse tendencies appear to be altering or even undermining nationhood, understood as belonging to a sovereign people with a shared heritage. Philosophers have discussed individualism, multiculturalism, and globalization – in Canada we have the recent contribution of substantial thinkers like Charles Taylor, John Ralston Saul, George Grant, and Leslie Armour. In addition, the role of religion is emerging as a prominent factor determining nationhood: from political and patriotic Christian Evangelism in the United States, Canada, and Latin America to the traditional theocratic tendencies in the Middle East, and the role of Hinduism and Confucianism in promoting national identities is significant. Furthermore, any discussion of nationhood in the 21st century must take into account concerns associated with the role of Islam in European and American societies, and the contribution of Native American religion to our appreciation of the natural environment and cohesive community. All papers addressing the role of philosophy and/or religion in determining the meaning of nationhood in the 21st century are welcome. Papers should be in English or French and should not exceed 35 minutes reading time. Selected papers will be published in Maritain Studies/Études maritainiennes. Those who wish to present a paper should send a one-page abstract or proposal to: Dr. Elizabeth Trott Email: etr...@ryerson.ca The Symposium will be organized in association with the Congress of the Social Sciences and Humanities. __________________________________________________ Philosophie, religion et signification de la nationalité au XXIe siècle Le 21e siècle est caractérisé par diverses tendances qui altèrent, voire mettent en question la notion de nationalité au sens d’appartenance à un people souverain partageant un héritage commun. Les philosophes abordent les questions de l’individualisme, du multiculturalisme et de la mondialisation – songeons, pour s’en tenir au Canada, aux contributions de penseurs d’envergure comme Charles Taylor, John Ralston Saul, George Grant et Leslie Armour. De plus, le rôle de la religion devient de plus en plus déterminant dans la compréhension de la nationalité, comme le manifeste le rôle significatif, au plan de la promotion des identités nationales, du patriotisme politique des mouvements évangéliques chrétiens aux États-Unis, au Canada et en Amérique latine, des tendances théocratiques traditionnelles émergentes au Moyen Orient ou encore de l’hindouisme et du confucianisme. De surcroît, toute discussion de la nationalité au 21e siècle relative aux questions de l’environnement naturel et de la cohésion sociale doit tenir compte des préoccupations relatives au rôle de l’Islam au sein des sociétés européenne et américaine, tout comme de la contribution de la religion des premiers peuples d’Amérique. Toute communication portant sur le rôle de la philosophie et/ou de la religion dans la determination de la signification de la nationalité au 21e siècle est bienvenue. Les communications peuvent être présentées en anglais ou en français et ne devraient pas dépasser 35 minutes. Les communications choisies seront publiées dans Études maritainiennes/Maritain Studies.
