Nessus is nice and free, but not Windows based. It's a client/server setup, the reporting console can be a Windows client, but the actual scanner is Linux based. I set up a dual-boot XP/Linux laptop server so I can take the scanner to different locations in our network and scan from different directions to get different views, all initiated from my PC (running XP). Snort is a good IDS (one of the best) and free.
