XFA is NOT an Adobe only product, there are other companies that offers
XFA-based solutions. However, I am not aware of any open-source libraries in
this area. iText has limited support for XFA (mostly reading & writing it as a
blob), but since it is XML you can do most things outside of iText anyway.

The one big thing that you can't do with iText (or any other open source
solution at this time) is flattening/rendering the XFA. For that, you will
need a solution such as Adobe's LiveCycle ES servers...

Subject: [iText-questions] iText form manipulation : Acroform of XFA...

Hi,

I need to generate PDF documents and want to use a form as a template. Just
like the IText "accreditation card" exemple. I will then fill fields and
merge PDF & form to produce a PDF server side.

So far, I've played with Acroforms with success but I miss some formating
options

I've tried to design a form with LiveCycle Designer, which I think produces
XFA forms. With this, I can produce some advanced layout but I wonder :

- will I be able to "flatten" the XFA Form and the background PDF ?
- will I have access to "floating fields" via IText
- will I ultimately need another library that IText or even Adobe server
software to manipulate XFA form because it's an Adobe "only" product ?

Thanks a lot.
