With VBI on, I still got the "start of buffer" errors.  They went away
when I turned VBI off and the recordings appeared to be fine.  I did find
8 instances of the following errors though:

Mar 23 19:14:30 tux kernel: i2c_adapter i2c-3: sendbytes: error - bailout.
Mar 23 19:14:30 tux kernel: msp3400 3-0040: I/O error #0 (read 0x10/0x200)
