What happens if you do not specify a tuner type at all?  Or is that what
you were doing before.

AFAIK, the ivtv module is supposed to be able to determine and set the
tuner type by itself, so you can technically omit 'options ivtv tuner=50'.

What's the model number on the box?  It should be next to the UPC symbol. 
Should be some number like 1045.
