Thanks for pinpointing the problem. The motherboard is a Mini-ITX with only 1 
PCI slot, but your reply gave me the clue I needed: "possible hardware 
problem with PCI slot". Since the card is connected to the motherboard 
through 2 PCI risers (don't ask ^^), I removed and reseated everything... and 
that did it! I had no idea a flimsy PCI seating could cause such a behavior. 
Thought the card would just work, or not...
