It seems that it is attaching correctly though. Even when working
correctly, does it show as in use by ivtv? (I can't remember, don't
have access to my machine atm)

What is in your modprobe.conf? That bttv stuff worries me a little,
it's obviously starting for some reason. You don't have an 'alias
char-major-81-0 bttv' do you?

Remove (or just rename) the bttv.ko file, rerun depmod and see how that goes.
