For reference, it looks like 'ivtvctl -x 1 -b wss -x wss', does allow TVs that respond to widescreen VBI to switch between 4:3 and 16:9 based on the signal fed to the PVR350. My 32" Panasonic certainly does.
However, the cheapo RGB->svideo convertor that I use strips the VBI from the signal during conversion. This is a real shame as I either have composite+VBI or svideo with no VBI. I'm currently using the composite signal to see how well the widescreen VBI integrates with Myth. If it's worth it, I may consider buying a better quality RGB->svideo convertor as I'm already noticing the reduction in visual quality using the composite input...
