Hi Phil,

Thanks for your suggestion of finding and reading the serial-console.txt. 
It made me realize that I needed to recompile the Knoppmyth kernel with
serial console support. Knoppmyth had this support as a loadable module.
Now the serial console works. 
I will leave the terminal running and hopefully capture a last
message before the system freezes. The whole system freezes so
no ssh or keyboard entry is possible any more. Maybe some driver that
gets into an endless loop or something ?

I assume you've read Documentation/serial-console.txt in the kernel
sources.

Sounds like you've done all the right things at the TV-box end. What
sort of serial cable are you using (should be null-modem), and what's
the terminal software at the far end?
