Subject: Re: Fw: UK Requirement
Dear Mr. Gaus,
I do not recall how you got my e-mail address.
However, I saw that you
associated me with the Jakarta Post. I assume you were
one of my
readers. As practioner in Educational Technology, I
encourage to explain you
the situation of what you sent me as titled above.
I first received such e-mails when i first knew
internet or back in
1997 in the Netherlands. Just like what you did, I
sent it to many of my
friends then. It didn't make me richer even a penny by
sending it to
many of my friends. As a matter of fact. there were
many harms had been
done. Let me illustrate you with the following harm
list:
1. The e-mail you sent is approx. 150kb. If you have
sent this to 100
people, it means you have clogged internet with
15000kb data. It would
have created even more massive clog should 50% of the
recepients
believed in it.
2. Since the message have been around for almost 10
years now, I
believed there are many of the recepients have
received this message but they
did sending it again for pratical joke motives. Those
who received this
for the first time would believe it even more. I do
believe it will
increase the impact by another 10 % (estimation)
3. FYI, the world has spent billions of Dollars to
fight spam like
this. The number that the world spends in fighting
spam in a year is bigger
than our national budget by several times. This
8-year-old e-mail has
proven that those money end up in vain.
4. My ex-boss was almost got fired because such
e-mails. He was using
his office e-mail and signed (as usual) using his
title. Many of the
senders in your forwarded e-mails were using their
office e-mails. Some of
them even using business disclaimer at the end of
their messages.
Should there be any lawsuit, the sender, not the
company, may be affected
by it. That's what happened to me ex-boss. He got
lucky that he could
prove it otherwise.
5. There are several clues in the message that you can
spot it as hoax.
First of all, how can everyone get the money you do
not send any bank
account number while forwarding it. even if you send
an account number
in the e-mail, how and who would Microsoft verify it.
6. There was once more advance hoax that addressed to
attack Nokia. The
senders was requested to cc the e-mail to
someone_at_nokia.com. What
happened was that all nokia servers were down for
weeks because millions
of e-mails were sent to them. The servers was busy
receiving and
sending mailer daemon that stated "no e-mail address
by that name".
The harm list is not exhaustive. I could write the
whole weeks and it
will still be exhaustive. Now, I think you owe an
apology to the persons
that you sent this e-mail. You can make it up by
explaining it and stop
forwarding chain message. Please rethink it over
everytime you were
asked to forward e-mails whether it is worth sending.
It will eventually
save you your time and bandwidth.
