I have used Real Player for at least 10 years, since the days when it was called Real Audio. I have had no problems with it. I have often read that it messes with people's computers, but I have not experienced these issues. When you install it, you can choose which components load at startup, which file types you want it to play, etc. It can indeed take over control of your audio and video if you let it, but you don't have to let it. There is also a Preferences menu that will allow you to change options at any time. You certainly may choose to use a different program, but that's your choice, as it is with anything, but you shouldn't be discouraged from using it because of fear.
