The voluem up/down hotkey works, but inconsistently for me. It's quite
strange. You can increase or decrase the volume through the audio menu, but
using the hotkeys would be more convenient. Unfortunately results are
unpredictable with it.

I haven't really looked into this, but I believe it is possible to
completely remap all VLC keyboard commands. Thus, JAWS users could adopt
different volume control keystrokes. However, as I said, I've never looked
into this; frankly I've always found it much simpler to use default keys; it
also helps when trying to explain to someone how to do something, of course.

that list is for general usage, and the VLC wiki provides more complete and
up to date lists.
and the important key for volume change doesn't work that's only with jaws
users unfortunately.
