You can also go into the trust settings to disable this outright.

Miriam,
Word & Excel documents will always arrive in protected mode as an attachment
to an email.  If you have used this file before & is now showing as
protected then that is another of those great cosmic mysteries about
computers as to what caused it.
At any rate, ALT- F, + I + E will remove the protection.
