Same problem here - but only when sending mails. My workaround is to change 
the smtp mailserver address to its ip address. In my case the wifi network 
and the mailserver have ipv6 addresses, but the mailserver's mta has no 
binding to :::25 due to other reasons. I ask myself why K9 does not 
recognise this obvious problem and falls back to IPv4.
