According to it's documentation it uses the meta modifier. I'm not sure what is really meant by this as today's keyboards don't have a meta key. The best I found is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_key Most likely that transferred to alt as keyboards in the beginning 90ies neither had a meta nor a Windows key. In old X speak windows is not the meta key, but super or hyper. I did this research out of personal interest as I didn't know why KWin has that binding.
