I just did some research: the first window manager (twm) already uses the
pattern of modifier+click to move a window (see for example:
https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/x-window-system/9780937175149/Chapter03.html#ch3-06
). According to it's documentation it uses the meta modifier. I'm not sure what
is really meant by this as today's keyboards don't have a meta key. The best I
found is: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_key

Most likely that transferred to alt as keyboards in the beginning 90ies neither
had a meta nor a Windows key. In old X speak windows is not the meta key, but
super or hyper.

I did this research out of personal interest as I didn't know why KWin has that
binding. Now we see it is as old as X11 window managers which means it predates
the digital painting industry.
