Hello list

As an colormanagement consultant I´m regularly meeting developers of applications making use of colormanagement-functionalities.

During the last months, I had several cases, that developers of commercial applications told me, that they are using littleCMS inside.

Even if both Windows and MacOS X have a ICC-compatible CMM inside, professional developers prefer littleCMS for cross plattform applications.

Actually neither Marti nor the littleCMS community has any benefit, if littleCMS is used in commercial applications.

Even for commercial companies, which wish to sponsor littleCMS or Marti, it is really hard to transfer money, because, there is no infrastructure for it.

From my view, littleCMS is shortly before becoming the "apache" of cross-plattform ICC-based colormanagement.

So I would like to ask marti, if he has ideas about the future of littleCMS, he wants to share with us.

I personally see two possible directions:

1. The foundation
-----------------
This is the way, several opensource projects like apache, perl, mozilla are going. The structure of the organization is complementary to the idea of open-source.

2. The opensource company
-------------------------
This is way e.g. mySQL is going. The inventors of mySQL want primarly to earn money with services and support around their opensource project.

I personaly would prefer the idea of an foundation. This would e.g. make it easier to get a honorary membership at the ICC.

Donations to the "littleCMS foundation" would e.g. allow to pay marti flights and accomodations for visiting ICC-meetings over the world...

If other people like, to think about this ideas, we could make two things:
- a wiki about it
- a meeting at e.g. Mallorca or Barcelona. Mallorca is a destination with very cheap flights from all over europe. Barcelona would be the best point for marti.

So what are the ideas of the others ?

Greetings (actual from warsaw)
:-) Jan-Peter
