Police Harrassment of University Students for East Timor

Community leaders and solictors representing students supporting East
Timorese independence will hold a press conference today to release
details of harrassment by the renamed police Special Branch.

Victoria Police's Protective Security Intelligence Group (PSIG) has
questioned six members of the group, University Students for East Timor,
for offences ranging from criminal damage to arson. The police
investigation relates to the peaceful burning of the Indonesian flag
during a protest. The students have been told that they will be charged
on summons.

The PSIG's harrassment of the students followed a peaceful protest
inside the grounds of the Indonesian consulate in Melbourne. The protest
took place on 2 September, two days after the East Timorese independence
referendum and during the killings and violence against the locals in
East Timor.

The Indonesian flag was burned to protest against the destruction of
towns and villages in East Timor by the Indonesian military and the pro
Indonesian militias.
