Maybe but with government as large as it is today, how can any office holder 
avoid conflicts?

I understand your beef and have a hard time refuting it.  OTOH what is supposed 
to be a servant of the people should not be penalized... someone like a State 
or US congresscritter.  Maybe we need to make those jobs gratis and allow them 
to vote?
