Just to make a bizarre, non-snake related guess.
Does windows create a new hardware profile for docked and undocked
modes?
Does it have different volume settings for each mode?
Is the volume turned all the way up by default in the docked mode?
Note I am really being the blind leading the blind as I run Linux on my
lib...
