New description:
While the "umlauts" work fine in usernames, they don´t
work correctly in away messages, for example. They´re
displayed as 2 garbage characters. Looks like UTF-8
isn´t displayed correctly. I haven´t checked with ICQ
messages, perhaps the bug is also there.
I´m using SuSE 10.0 with UTF-8 as default encoding with
the QT GUI.

If anyone still experiences this problem with latest version of Licq,
please reopen ticket and specify which client and version the problem
appears with.
