I would be very, very surprised if it did not build out of the box.
I don't know what the current levels of GNU Make *are* in the various
distros, other than Debian Etch, which is indeed 3.81.
RHEL5 and therefore CentOS 5 have it. C5 is a rebuild of RHEL5 and there
is a build available for Zeds.
