Welcome to the weekly newsletter of the Linux Professional
Institute(tm)!

LPI is dedicated to providing a standardized, multi-national, and
respected program to certify levels of individual expertise in Linux.
Our goal is to design and deliver such a program from within the Linux
community, using both volunteer and hired resources as necessary. We
resolve to undertake a well considered, open, disciplined development
process, leading directly to the establishment of a recognized and
widely endorsed Linux certification body.

What's News?

T1a Rolls On
------------
T1a has been out for a week now and the early participation results
are encouraging. Here are some factoids:

o In the first forty-eight (48!) hours, we had over three
hundred (300!) people register with VUE for LPI testing ID's.
o As of Monday, we've already delivered thirteen tests, and
       had thirteen more scheduled.
o Europe leads North America in the total number of exams
delivered, but only by a slim margin. ( EU: 7 vs. NA: 6 )
o North America, however, has more tests scheduled than any other
region. ( NA: 9 vs. EU: 2 and Asia: 2)

We're really happy with the early response we've seen and hope that we
can keep this level of excitement going in the future.

T1b is in it's final reviewing stages right now and work on all
the T2x exams is continuing. While I'm on that thought, please get
off your couch-warmers and get over to:

  http://www.lpi.org/cgi-bin/tips.py

and start contributing your distribution specific skills. Remember
the first distro that gets all the required test questions in is the
  first distro to be published!

Trade Shows - LinuxWorld
------------------------
LinuxWorld Expo is coming upon us quickly and as usual we'd
love to see you there. Amy Walker has graciously decided to
pick up the duties of event coordinator at LinuxWorld and
she can use all the help we can muster.

We need folks to help out at LPI's booth and to spread the word
about LPI Feb 2-4 at the Javits Center in New York City. If you
would be able to help for a few hours, please contact Amy
  Walker ([EMAIL PROTECTED]).

LPI Welcomes Kara!
------------------
In case you missed Scott's early message, we'd like to welcome
Kara Pritchard ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) to the LPI family. Kara has a long
history of involvement in the Linux community and will be
responsible for overseeing program development for LPI's Linux
  certification program.

Tom Peters, who led LPI's program development activities during
1999, has stepped down from this role but will remain active as a
member of the LPI Board of Directors. Tom will also serve as an Exam
Development Specialist and will continue to contribute to LPI's
  development efforts in that capacity.

More FAQs Answered
------------------
I've got some more information to post on FAQs that I've seen in
the last week. Some you'll notice there are repeats that I'm posting
again due to the sheer number of questions we're still getting
on those topics. You can always get the full FAQs at:
  http://www.lpi.org/faq.html

Q: Is your test available in my area?
A: With 1700 testing centers around the world, the odds are good that
VUE has an exam facility in your area. Want to find out for sure?
      Try visiting VUE's web site:

      http://www.vue.com/testing/index.html

Simply choose the "Locate testing centers," then pick "Linux
Professional Institute Testing" off the list and click on
"Continue." Pick your country off of the next list and click
"Continue" again and you should either get a list of states or
provinces to choose from, or you will get directly to the list
of testing centers in your area. Addresses and contact
information for each site are listed there; some even have links
      to driving directions.

Q: I keep hearing that the first few exams are "beta"; what's
      that mean?
A: In order to assure that we've got a psychometrically valid
test and to establish proper cut scores, LPI need to closely
scrutinize the results of our early test takers. The exam
that's available through VUE right now is the "production"
exam and is exactly the same exam content that will be
available after the "beta" period is over. The only
difference is that you'll have to wait a few weeks for a
snail mail letter to let you know if you passed or not,
instead of the instant gratification of knowing when you
leave the test center. The "beta" counts 100% towards your
level one certification. Keep in mind that we need lots of
early adopters for validation, so get out there and test,
test, test! (The faster we can validate the test, faster
we can get you your results!)

Q: I want to be able to offer LPI's certification exams; what do I
     to do?
A: Get in touch with VUE and become an authorized testing center.
     You can find information at:

       http://www.lpi.org/i-testcenter.html

Q: How can I partner with LPI on training?
A: LPI doesn't provide training, only certification. If you're
interested in doing training, you can use our published
objectives to design your own course:

        http://www.lpi.org/p-index.html

or you can try contacting some of the companies listed on

        http://www.lintraining.com

or poke around on your favorite search engine for other
     opportunities. Best of Luck!
