Hello world,
I have a big problem,
I have installed XFree 4.0 with NVIDIA drivers (v0.9-3), and it work nice.
But I would like to install XFree 4.0.1 in order to use NVIDIA drivers
(v0.9-5), the installation of XFree work, I think, but when I launch the
Xserver it crash and I must reboot the computer.
I have a BX chipset.
Here the /var/log/XFree86.0.log
XFree86 Version 4.0.1 / X Window System
(protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6400)
Release Date: 1 July 2000
If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer
than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting
 problems. (see http://www.XFree86.Org/FAQ)

Does anyone know how or what should i configure
to play and listen to music cd's using a dvd?
The dvd is working fine (suse 7.0), and also the
sound card. However, using common utilities to
play a cd (from gnome or kde) i get no sound.
Thanks
        Luis

Subject: Forcing Linux to detect my hardware without rebooting the system
Date: Fri, 03 Nov 2000 02:18:39 -0500

Hi,
As an example, I have this NE2000 clone network card
that I want to install in the system. Using Redhat 6.1 Linux
In the file conf.modules I have a statement:

    alias eth0 ne irq=10 io=0x300

Somehow that does not cause the system to install the
network card.
I did lsmod and did not find the ne.o driver installed.
I did modprobe ne and got the following results:
/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/net/ne.o : unresolved symbols
ei_open, ethdev_init, ei_interrupt, NS8390_init, ei_close.

I think that this means that the system does not want to
load the module. I'm not sure where to go from here.

A question that I have had in the past, which might
help me in troubleshooting is the following : If I change
something in the /etc/conf.modules. How can I get
the system to re-read the file without rebooting the system?

There is something else strange with this system.
When I did lsmod, it listed sound drivers. This drive
was once used in a system with a sound card, but,
it is no longer there and I have commented out
the listing for the sound drivers in the /etc/conf.modules
file, yet the drivers still get loaded.

                                                        Thanks
                                                                Mike

Well, I don't know if I can solve your problem, but here's a couple of
things that might help:

Not all systems actually use the conf.modules (or modules.conf) file.
I *thought* Redhat did though. Have you re-compiled your kernel lately?
It sounds like autoload modules isn't enabled, and that you are using
modules compiled for another kernel (the Unresolved Symbols error).
I can't remember off the top of my head where to enable autoload
modules,
but it's in the kernel config. I've had similar problems - make sure
you are compiling the NE2000 driver as a module (not "built into" the
kernel), make sure autoload modules is enabled, and make sure you're
doing
a "make modules" and "make modules_install".

I am experiencing the same problems as you. Using a linksys card and
Red Hat will not recognize it. It can see the intel card no problem.
Linksys told me the same thing about the tulip stuff.

Tested three systems on my server. Windows 2000 server, Novell 5.x, and
Redhat Linux server. Of the three, Windows 2000 server is the only one
that I could get up and running and working as a intranet file server
in and exceptable amount of time. The others have takin over a week to
get anywhere near partly operational. I have to be honest windows only
took three hours to load and configure and 18 hours to download all the
file to be shared from another server. I gotta say it works ok. I have
a pc class server running windows 2k pro that is being used as an
intranet webserver, it is running so well that I have disconnected the
monitor and keyboard for use on a machine elsewhere. Im not touting ms
as a kick ass win all beat all solution, but they are getting more
stable... As for Linux... It is not consistant enough for big business
yet.
Anyway the linksys thing is a pain in the ass.

Hey, I was wondering what input anybody could give me about getting DHCP
working on my laptop. I'm running RH 7.0 and with a Dell CPx using a
Xircom Realport ethernet PCMCI card. I have tried to get it working
with both the pump and dhcpcd utilities. I have tried everything in the
HowTo's and still no luck. When I statically assign an IP and other
info in the configuration files networking works fine. Any ideas on how
to get this to work? All it does is logs timing out messages in
/var/log/messages....
