I'm not sure what you're missing; the S1855 is a Postscript printer
which is reported to work just fine with the usual Linux software.

What's missing?

Thanks.

I don't expect much from running X anyway. It is basically to be used as
a dumb terminal ;) I just think why not use Linux if it can ;)

I haven't tried Debian Linux for quite some time. I'll give it a try..
Thanks again

Subject: Two SCSI controllers, 2 OSes, one hard drive. Help!
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 18:56:08 GMT

Hi all,

I'm working on a control system for an astronomy CCD camera that uses
two computers: one is a DOS box that talks to the camera via a sequencer,
the other is a linux box (Redhat 5.2) where the user sits to issue commands
(which are passed to the DOS box via serial line) and analyze/reduce the
data as it is taken. Both systems are SCSI, and the SCSI card for each
computer is connected to the other via SCSI cable, so that both computers
have access to all of the hard drives.

The camera's designers assure me that the two machines can't be connected
via, for example, NFS, because an ethernet card in the DOS box would introduce
interrupts that interfere with the sequencer's ability to write data to disk.

Now, the problem: when the DOS box takes a picture, it writes it to a DOS
formatted disk. The linux box, however, never becomes aware that there is
a new file on that disk; an 'ls' shows only those files that were present
when the directory was first listed.

This is probably because the kernel is caching the directory
information after the first 'ls', then never querying the disk again.
I've tried remounting the drive, syncing, etc., but the only way to
make linux see the new files is to reboot the linux box before trying to
read new files.

I need a way to force linux to check this shared disk for any new files
every time it is accessed. Is there a utility I can use to force this
check? Is there a particular SCSI card more well suited to this task? Or,
will it require hacking the linux SCSI driver?

System details:
Linux side: Adaptec AHA-294X driver (id=7)
            sda (id=1)
            sdb (id=4)
DOS side: Using a custom Advansys SCSI driver ("customized to share
SCSI resources with other controllers") (id=6)

Thanks,

Jon

Thanks for all who responded.

Someone from XFree86 suggested several options, and I found that add
"no_accel" options solves the xv problem. However, it slows the X down.

Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 13:01:23 -0000

The speed choices presented by your application are computer-to-modem
speeds.
The rated speed of your modem, 28800, is a modem-to-modem speed. You should
set
the computer-to-modem speed as high as you can in the application. Then
you'll get
28800 modem-to-modem, assuming your telephone line quality is good enough.
Some
modems/serial ports can only run at up to 57600: it just depends on the
hardware involved.
That's not a problem for you since you're working with 28800. Just don't
pick 19200 since
that will effectively limit your throughput to 19200.

Good luck!

You need an accelerated X server to support the chipset, not a new vid card.

Try Metro-X

Oh yeah, NO 3D / Open GL support comes with XFree86, you have 2 choices,
get Mesa (Not full support) or get an accelerated X server. I think there
are a couple
of others available but, Metro Links' Metro-X seems to be the best

It's not crappy hardware, but crappy implementation.
In fact, according to my local taiwanese, Creative is
very creative as far as PCI is concerned, and only special
_windows_ drivers are able to talk to them.

I agree, but I also suspect that sooner or later someone will hack up a

Hi,

this is what I just found out trying to use a MO640:

- The drive can be accessed using kernel 2.2.3
- I could use the disk without partitioning using ext2 and FAT
  (remember to use '-b 2048' with mke2fs)
- using normal fdisk does not work for partitioning
- The disk can be partitioned using fdisk from www.erlangen.netsurf.de/linux-mo/
(thanks for the hint :-) )

And then there are two setup programs, one is text based (xf86config),

of course win98

does anyone see any problems that they have already run into?
Also, I am a newbie, if anyone can recommend any good web tutorials or
anything it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a thought, having worked with similar intruments (CCD array
controlled by a Harris RTX 2010 controller talking to a PC via a custom
baud rate serial line and a 24 wire PIO card (3 8-bit parallel
channels)....
Why not just use the Linux box for everything, instead of sharing a SCSI
disk between two O/S's (particulalry when one is DOS). I found it
actually *easier* to write the low level controller stuff for Linux than
for DOS...

Subject: Anyone out there using the Kyocera F-800T Laser printer?
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 21:59:30 +0100

Hi,

I recently got an (ancient, but good) Kyocera F-800T laserprinter.
I took it to a friend which had windows and tested it, quality was good
and it didn't give any problems.
As I wanted to use it in Linux, I noticed the quality was reduced
(though it was configured at 300x300), and it first prints a page of
junk.
The drivers I've tried are the one of HP laserjet and the standard
Postscript printer, both seem to be the same and don't correct the
problems.

Anyone who can help me with this?

Subject: Diamon Viper V550 & XServer Problems...
Date: Thu, 25 Mar 1999 15:07:57 GMT

Hi there...
     I am running a PII-based system with a Diamond Viper V550 (16MB SDRAM).
This card is based on NVidia's Riva TNT 128 chipset, which, I believe is
supported by XFree86. After completing the RedHat 5.2 basic installation,
when I ran xf86config, I noticed that the V550 wasn't listed, though the
XFree86 website does list the card as using the XF86_SVGA server. I hence
tried selecting the Viper 330, and I did not specify the RAMDAC or Clockchip
since I was not able to procure the details.
Under the videomodes, I selected 800x600 for al the color density
modes. Upon completing the xf86config, when I do run the server using
startx, I typically notice that one of two things happens. Either the server
does not start at all, crashing with a plethora of error messages, including
"Not enough memory", "No Screens found", and a whole bunch of others. The
"Not enough memory" (which is detected as 64k!!) is particularly riling,
considering I have 16Megs on board! I understand that some cards have some
problem with only having 1MB being accessible by Linux, and sure hope this
isn't one of them. Either way, when I do manage to get the Xserver to start,
the graphical display starts up in 320x204 mode, where I really can't see
enough info on screen to do anything constructive! :(

Do reply with any pointers or hints you might have, and anything I might be
doing wrong.

Thanks a ton. Do Cc: a copy to my email address as well.
