Please check your modem model against the list at:
   http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

The SupraMax modems are winmodems. However, the SupraExpress 56i is a
conventional modem with jumpers. The SupraExpress 56i Pro is a winmodem,
and the SupraExpress 56e Pro is a conventional external modem. Is that
confusing enough?

AFAIK, there is no SupraMax 56i, so please check the list :)

You can get the Kernel at the typical places like ftp.kernel.org or any of
its mirrors.

To start the elaboration: I followed mostly the Banshee Vesa mini-howto at
http://www.uno.edu/~adamico/banshee/Welcome.html

The only deviation is, that i had to add a "Depth 24" line in the display
section to get it to work.

Don't know if this helps any, but redhat does include sound support in
the kernel by default. You shouldn't have to do anything but run
sndconfig andlet it autodetect it.

Newer kernels support FAT32, so you probably need to rev up to 2.2.x or
2.0.36. Mount the disk with type vfat, just like for FAT16 disks.

I can already tell you: No, the Rage 128 does not work with the XFree86
Version which comes with RedHat 5.2 (and the released updates won't work
either). There is currently no free X-Server which knows about the Rage 128
natively.

The only way to make the card work under XFree with RedHat 5.2 is to get
a newer Kernel (2.1.119 or later, I am using 2.2.3) and activate support
for Vesa Frame-Buffer. Then get the X-Server for Frame-Buffer Devices
(which is not included with RedHat 5.2) from www.xfree.org or one of its
mirrors. After a bit of configuration (by hand, no fancy tools will work)
I have this combination running in 1024x768 24Bit 60Hz. I could even get
1280x1024 24Bit but only in 87Hz interlaced (because of a limitation in
the Vesa BIOS not my monitor).

If there is need I can elaborate on how to configure it, but the machine is
at home, so I don't have direct access.

Hi All,

I just received a recycled Compaq Deskpro 486 33/M PC. Unfortunately, I
don't even any documentation (I tried www.compaq.com, but didn't see any
info about 33/M model). I really desperate to install Linux to replace
the DOS and Win31 on that PC, but I don't know if Linux will have a driver
for the SCSI controller and video card.

It doesn't use IDE drive, but SCSI instead. Sorry. I wish I could find
out more about the host adaptor chip set.. Here is the only thing I have
(by eye inspection)

486 33, EISA bus with 8Mb RAM
SCSI: MicroNet HA-06 EISA SCSI Host Adaptor
- Bustek 80C20 203, AMD N80188-10, EMULEX 2400119 are the 3 big chips I
  saw on the controller.
Video: Hi-Res 1280 from Helio Communication, 2Mb
- unknown chipset (the whole chip is covered by a heat sink <sigh> ;)

Any one has any information on this?
Thanks in advance

You CPUs are multiplier locked by Intel. You can only OC them by
changing the bus clock. Bumping to a 103mhz clock will give you 412, and I
have not seen any that will NOT run safely at this speed.

Have you also investigated how many would move away from Windows and
Mac if there were attractive high end audio hardware and drivers
available for better systems? Or how many are reluctant to move their
production over to computers because the available audio systems are
not reliable enough under the two dominating operating systems?

I am running a studio, and I am really sick of the unreliability of
Microsoft and Apple's operating systems. It is embarassing and a waste
of time for us and the clients to wait for the computer to reboot
again and again because of the flaws of these OSs. Several of my
colleagues agree. You would be surprised to see how many are watching
the market for better alternatives. Linux and BeOS are here, they are
great alternatives. We just need the support of the audio hardware
industry. The pro audio market is in any rate miniscule compared to
the hobby and games audio market that will always be dominated by
Windows and Mac. If you make an effort to support Linux and BeOS,
which both are superior to Windows and Mac, you will get more
credibility in the pro audio market. We need high quality, reliable
and customisable tools to do our job properly and to show some respect
for our clients' time and money.

Sportster 56K Message Modem. I'm using kppp with KDE on Debian 2.1 and
kernel 2.0.36 to call my ISP.

The 28.8 Motorola works fine (most of the time, but that's another
story). The Sportster causes kppp to hang at "Setting speaker volume".
Also, when I tell kppp to query the modem, all the ATI[1-7] strings are
empty. Same modem cables, same serial port, just different modem. Any
ideas ?

Hello,

I'm considering buying a PC to run under Linux. When reading
about scanner integration in Linux, I'm wondering why I always
see SCSI implied. I don't really want to spend the money for
SCSI (IDE is fine for me when it comes to disks), but does
using such a low-cost device as a scanner really require the
not-so-low costs of a SCSI system?

I don't know anything about the Always controller, but I ran into some similar
problems with my TekRam DC-390{F,U} and Adaptec 2940UW controllers. First of
all, if the Always controller is Ultra capable, make sure the termination on
all ends is active. Newer kernels became much more sensitive to the use of
active termination, even if you don't have Ultra devices. In particular, don't
rely on the device to do active termination, but instead get a cable that is
actively terminated (or a cable that has an extra connection, and put the
active terminator there).

Second, see if your tape has options for SCSI-1/SCSI-2, and if so, try it in
different configurations. My 3 year old Archive (nee Conner, nee Seagate)
Python stopped working in SCSI-2 mode, but worked better in SCSI-1 mode.
Ditto for disconnection. You might also play around with device assignments in
the scsi controller when booting (Adaptec for instance uses control-A to get
into the scsi screen when booting, while TekRam uses F2 or F6).

Third, given you mention an external port, if the Always has a 68 pin
connector, and you use a 68->50 pin cable or converter, are you sure the cable
properly terminates the upper bits? Many of the cables don't do the
termination. The adaptec online store does sell cables that do the
termination, but they are somewhat pricey.

Fourth, it might be that the Always doesn't support things like disconnection.
I've had good luck with TekRam DC-390U (ultra-wide) and DC-390F (ultra-narrow)
controllers, which use the NCR53C8XX drivers. The DC-390U doesn't seem to be
available any more, which would mean more headaches with conversion cables.
The DC-390F is about $70 mailorder.

The XJ6C is a PCL 3 printer, and is known to work with Ghostscript.

The XJ8C, however, does not seem to be a PCL printer, and I'm not
aware of any driver for it.

Please put whatever information you find out into the Printing HOWTO's
compatibility database at http://www.picante.com/~gtaylor/pht/printer_list.cgi

There really should be a FAQ vor this because it comes up every day.
No wonder, I couldn't find the answer either before buying my PCI128.
But, here is what happened:

RedHat 5.2 "sndconfig" said I had an Ensoniq AudioPCI and proceeded to
set it up, which was no more than "alias sound es1370" in /etc/conf.modules.

The es1370 driver that comes with RedHat 5.2 works, but has some problems.
It won't play mu-law audio files so "cat file.au >/dev/audio" won't work
right. And the mixer behaviour is so bizarre I can't imagine how they got
it that way except on purpose. Various sliders interact with each other
in completely non-obvious ways and if you ever use the "aumix" utility
(command-line-based mixer) you lose the right channel of the "line" input
and can't get it back without a hard reset of the computer. Joystick is
supported (if you add "joystick=1" on the line in conf.modules) but won't
work with the standard joystick driver because it reserves the I/O locations
(I modified the joystick driver to not try to reserve them and then it
worked OK.) The right channel is muted every time you start up a mixer
program (but unmutes again if you nudge the volume slider.)

Other than that it works, which means "mpg123" plays .mp3 files, "play" plays
.wav files, games and emulators have sound and so on.

The es1370 driver in 2.2 is considerably newer but not backward-compatible
with 2.0 and personally I am unwilling to try 2.2 until a RedHat distribution
comes out with it.

The "alsa" drivers do fix all this stuff but contain weirdness of their own
(which can, however, be worked around once and then forgotten about.)
I am willing to post the exact incantations I needed to make them work
if there is demand, write me at "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" (an e-mail account
I read when actually at my Linux machine.)

There, now someone else can answer the question when it occurs again tomorrow.

Hi all,

I'm still having some problems with my stc 740. I use Dales upp file,
but the testpage-a4 comes out shifted upward. (about 1.5 cm) Has anyone
seen this happen? and more importantly does anybody know the cure for
this?

Besides, how do I change the setup to print in a lower resolution?

Bert
