I did, and now it works! A voice begins to utter threatening language as soon as I select the difficulty level, and the game goes on. In the demo there were only shooting sounds, etc. Maybe voice synthesis is a different kind of task than making just "sounds". Wolf3D still hangs at the start screen, however.
