I've been using 2.5.69 for several weeks, and apart from problems with
things like mkswap and fdisk it's given me no trouble. I had terrible
problems with USB under 2.4 kernels up to .21, and they mostly went
away with 2.5. I haven't had time to look at what's changed since the
kernel I installed, but 2.5.74 seems to be out.

I'd say you should be cautious with your filesystems if you use 2.5,
but if you can take precautions with your data and if you don't find
any warnings other than the usual "careful, this might trash your hard
drive, cause your computer to catch fire and your marriage to fail"
variety then go ahead and try the latest 2.5 kernel (2.5.74?).

You don't have to be a programmer to compile a kernel, but you'll need
to devote some time to reading the docs and you'll want to be familiar
with using something like Lilo to be able to boot from more than one
kernel. There are a few tools and support packages which you may need
to upgrade, that can be a bit of a pain, but it's all explained in the
kernel documentation.

To any Linux user who's contemplating messing around with his systems
I'd recommend making himself familiar with the process of building and
installing new kernels and also keeping an eye on the development
situation. There are numerous Linux groups about on the 'net which
offer help to new users and experienced users alike. I've never used
any of them I'm afraid, so can't give an opinion on their usefulness.
Maybe others here can help.

If you're just using the box as a workstation then I'd say stay with
the latest stable releases and only upgrade if you have to.

73,
Ged.
