I haven't forgotten about this - been busy with work stuff.   I'll reboot to linux now 
and try the patch.

VMWare gives me warning/error messages under the 2.6 kernel, which I guess is to be 
expected as it's written for 2.4.  However, I should be able to at least plug the 
printer in and get a device id.

Would it be a big change to make the patch work on 2.4.21 later?  (My kernel 
programming knowhow is nil)
