I've presented this problem to this list a couple of times and it
seemed that no one had an answer for me. It's been a little while so I
thought i'd come back to the list and see if anything new has come about
to help me.
I have a Lacie External USB CDRW drive. I know that it WILL work with
Linux as it has worked in the past. After I upgraded, however, it
stopped being properly detected the scsi system.
If I power the unit on, the USB hotplug scripts immediately detect,
load the scsi_mod module and the usb-storage module. An entry is
created in /proc/scsi/usb-storage for the device and everything looks
great. However, the final, critical step of the drive being assigned a
SCSI device is never done. /proc/scsi/scsi lists *NO* devices, and
cdrecord -scanbus shows nothing. At one point, I unloaded the
usb-storage module and then RE-loaded it and suddenly the SCSI system
woke up and assigned the drive to /dev/scd0! I could mount CD's and
everything. And then I had to reboot the system and was right back
where I started. The unload/reload of usb-storage never worked again
after that.
So I guess my FIRST question is a simple one: What kernel modules need
to be loaded in order for a USB CDR to be detected and assigned a SCSI
device? The SECOND question would be: What ORDER do these modules need
to be loaded in order for this magic planetary alignment to occur to
allow one to use a device of this type with Linux?
