I'm not aware of anything already in place (although there are several
groups doing work on printing strategies at the moment).  Having IEEE
1284 IDs available is vital to this sort of thing, yes, as is having a
comprehensive database of what to do with the information.  Even
having /etc/printcap configured _statically_ using this information
would be nice.
