As a footnote to this I've been told right or wrong that the xorg.conf should be put in /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d directory.
At least that's where I put my xorg.conf for a touch screen monitor I've got. but suppose it wouldn't matter too much if it's put in /etc/X11 directory either. Take what you want from this posting.
