HAL is what's supposed to do this. Currently, we're just using udev, so if the device doesn't issue an event for a media insertion, then the media's not detected. Some card readers DO, and that's why they work properly. As part of LTSP5, instead of only handling udev, we could look at using HAL, which CAN be set up to poll these kinds of devices.
