A guitarist acquaintance I worked with told me that when he was an impecunious student (a classical guitar performance major at UW) he would routinely clean his wound bases with alcohol. It removed a surprising amount of crud, and extended the usable life of the strings considerably. Not recommended for instruments with a shellac finish...
