A lutenist, particularly a lutenist capable of playing a Vivaldi concerto, would have known how to read staff notation, and at least one source of lute music, the della Casa book, is written in a sort of lute grand staff. > 3. This depends, of course, on how many trombones you're using. But there was an established tradition of one-to-a-part concerto playing in the 18th century.
