Dear Bill,
Gut also makes grooves - but some old instruments show fret knot indentation so I'm sanguine about it! I don't use nylon since I when tried it I found it difficult to fasten securely using the normal (ie historic) double fret knot without it slipping a little. And I like the elegance and ease of use of the old knot. Also prefer to wear the frets before the strings....... rgds M --- On Mon, 23/1/12, William Samson <willsam...@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: From: William Samson <willsam...@yahoo.co.uk> Subject: Re: [LUTE] Re: Tightening frets - was: Tempered fretting - take your pick - OOPS! I normally use double frets myself, but am surprised at how few people do. Gut miserliness maybe? I also (horror of horrors) often use nylon for the frets (I'm a different kind of miser) - I suspect these frets will outlive me! The only downside I've found with nylon frets is that the knot tends to dig grooves in the neck if it's not veneered with some very hard wood. Dear Bill, Double fret loops very rarely need tightening in such a fashion (ie bunging in small wedges). I guess the double length allows a greater stretch extension (and thus greater leeway) to be achieved. Also by tying in a higher place (ie closer to the nut) and then pulling down to the required position, as indeed Mace advises, the fret can be tied very tight indeed. Double frets have other advantages too in terms of wearing etc: you'll find communications about this in the archives. regards Martyn --- On Sun, 22/1/12, William Samson <[1]willsam...@yahoo.co.uk> wrote: From: William Samson <[2]willsam...@yahoo.co.uk> Subject: [LUTE] Re: Tempered fretting - take your pick - OOPS!
